The historic bar and restaurant La Piojera, a symbol of Santiago’s downtown since 1896, is in advanced negotiations to relocate to the Mercado Urbano de Tobalaba (MUT) in Las Condes. This potential move is motivated by increasing insecurity in its current location and a decline in sales of up to 60%, according to statements by manager Mauricio Gajardo. The relocation seeks to attract new audiences and preserve the famous identity of La Piojera, widely considered a touchstone of Chilean culture and gastronomy.
La Piojera’s opening at MUT could become a reality in a provisional capacity during the Fiestas Patrias, with the hope of a permanent establishment in the following weeks. Currently, the food and beverage menu is under review by the shopping center’s council, as 70% of La Piojera’s business depends on alcohol sales – a factor that could complicate obtaining the necessary liquor license, since only three venues at MUT currently hold that permit.
Negotiations have been meticulous: MUT enforces high standards, carefully examining the materials, identity, and menu of each business before approving new members. To meet these demands, La Piojera has hired a bartender and a chef to fulfill requirements and advance the process.
La Piojera’s significance as gastronomic heritage was emphasized by Santiago mayor Mario Desbordes, who publicly stated, “La Piojera cannot die,” urging efforts to safeguard the city’s traditional venues. For now, management affirms that the original location on Aillavilú 1030 will remain open while working towards an expansion in Las Condes.
Notably, La Piojera participated in the MUT’s “Fondas” during 2024’s Chilean Fiestas Patrias, offering “terremotos,” Chilean music, and traditional national games. This year, the historic venue is expected to make a return for celebrations on September 18th, bringing part of its legacy and flavor to Santiago’s eastern district.
